MTFC-Adolescents Programme

The A Programmme is for young people aged 11-16 years. It is designed to help young people to make the most of relationships with friends and family, to get on well in school and to enjoy leisure activities.

Foster carers with this age group are trained to supervise young people, to provide a close, mentoring relationship, encourage young people and to celebrate their achievements. Young people receive coaching in social skills which takes place in the community. They also see a therapist who helps them build up a range of coping strategies and problem-solving abilities.

Families are trained in parenting strategies that work for adolescents so that they can enjoy a positive relationship with their child. When children move to a permanent placement, their carers receive support to enable them to build on the skills the young person has learned.

MTFC-A offers a cost-effective alternative to residential treatment for adolescents with complex needs and challenging behaviours. The model has been shown to be effective with young people with histories of complex emotional, social and behavioural difficulties.

Specific treatment techniques used to achieve these outcomes are integrated from those therapies that have been shown to be most effective including cognitive, behavioural and family therapies.
